Supermarket giant Sainsbury's will create 25 new jobs in Bath when it opens its third store in the city later this year.

The company recently signed a deal to buy the former Woolworths store at Moorland Road in Oldfield Park.

The 40-year-old store closed in January following the collapse of the chain last year.

The store was damaged last weekend when a shopping trolley was used to smash its front windows in an incident described as a "heartbreaking"attack on the community by Oldfield Park councillor Will Sandry.

Sainsbury's has now signed a 15-year lease on the premises but has yet to name an opening date for the new store which will be run as a Sainsbury's Local branch.

The firm's head of property convenience, Stephen Boyce, said: "The new store will allow us to bring the Sainsbury's offer to the area in an improved and modernised store.

"We are looking forward to welcoming our new customers and colleagues when we open later this year."

Douglas Paull, a surveyor at Alder King, which marketed the premises, said Woolworths left a gap in a prime retail area used heavily by the local residents of Oldfield Park when it closed in January.

He said: "We received competitive demand from retailers for this unit, due to its location in the popular Moorland Road area of Bath and its large floor space."

Sainsbury's is also due to open a Sainsbury's Local store as part of the first phase of Bath's £360 million SouthGate development in November this year.

The chain is also intending to open a larger store as part of a development on a six-acre site between St Martin's Primary School and Three Ways School in Odd Down, which would then bring the total number of stores in Bath to five.

“Do Sainsburys really need to open a Sainsburys Local in the former Woolworths at Oldfield Park, considering it's not that far from the big Sainsburys at Green Park Station, plus there's already two Sainsburys Local stores in central Bath: Westgate (former MVC) and Southgate block C (next to Boots)?”

“Cant wait until they start building!

25 part ime jobs? More like 125 full and part time jobs that are very welcome. Tesco's is currently packed at all hours and is far too small. We desperatley need a supermarket on the southern slopes, and what better than a Sainsburys.

It is a shame thats the sports hall will not be built as I believe teenagers need somewhere to go and have fun after school rather than street corners. It is also a shame we will not have the 7 shops to the front of the development. As well as providing more jobs it would give a new heart to Odd down, currently lacking.

The traffic congestion is an issue, however by removing the parking on Frome road congestion will ease considerably.

And guys your property prices will rise!!!”

“I did post this on the Lidl story as it had turned in to a Lidl v Sainsburys debate, but it is probably better here and more relevant.

At 3.30 this afternoon we tried to drive up Frome Road and were unable to get anywhere because of all the heavy school traffic (3 on the one stretch) and parked cars for the hospital. Who in their right mind would allow any kind of supermarket to open up there with all the extra traffic it will entail. And if it is to be a Sainsburys Local, it will not even be 100 yds from the Tesco Express at Glasshouse, so will just be overkill. This is just supermarket madness and someone (naming no names but his initials are DF) should be concentrating on stopping the rot rather than getting involved in petty squabbles over the Christmas Market!

At the meeting to look at the plans for their "intended" store, most people seemed to be against it, so why are they continuing to try to get a foothold where they are not wanted?”

“What exactly is the 'Sainsbury's offer' that Stephen Boyce refers to? Is it clothing by any chance because that would do a lot for Moorland Road? If it is the usual food and mags/cardsand flowers outlet(which is just not needed along here) then it will have an effect on the exisiting shops which will at some point bring about their demise. It's all very well saying that people should remain loyal to the local traders, but as more and more homes become student properties then the fewer locals there are to remain loyal! I do hope that the 25 jobs have gone to long-term locals especially those that used to work for Woolworths. It's now just (another) waiting game.”

“I hope they sort their web site out then. I know of a number of people who have tried to apply for jobs on-line ( the only way to be able to do it now) only for the site to divert you back to the first page when submitting the appication.”
