A cricket player who was diagnosed with stomach cancer is helping to organise a fundraising day in aid of the charity Macmillan.

Gary Lewis had stomach cancer in 2009, and after surgery and several courses of chemotherapy he is in recovery.

Along with his teammates from the Stella Select team, based at Hampset Cricket Club in Odd Down, he is organising a 24-hour charity event.

Mr Lewis said: “When I was diagnosed, Macmillan helped in lots of ways.

“They seem to be ever-present at the RUH, and offer great help for victims and families, not only in coping with the disease, but with practical issues like finances, and returning to work issues.

“I benefited particularly from counselling they offered.”

Mr Lewis said the cricket club had been a great comfort to him during his illness.

He said: “The lads in the cricket team were a huge support to me and my family, and I tried to play whenever I was well enough.

“We would normally go on tour in July of each year, but as times are hard, a few of us simply couldn't manage it.

“So instead this charity event was suggested.”

The charity event - which is not open to the public - will take place tomorrow at the club grounds from noon, finishing at noon on Sunday.

It will include crazy golf, pool, penalty shoot-out, spacehopper races, skittles, and a quiz.
