The club has been wanting to create a bigger ground – it currently has a capacity of 12,200 – for more than a decade.

Successive consultation exercises have revealed an overwhelming majority of people in favour of the club remaining at its historic home, but the Charity Commission's latest deliberations are the closest thing to a breakthrough in the last ten years.

The club is now considering whether to build a new arena in stages, with the most sensitive riverside West Stand being constructed first, although no firm decision has yet been made.

Its East Stand will remain temporary forever, so that the Rec can remain open when rugby is not being played and can accommodate cricket and other sporting activities.

The club says it cannot yet put a cost on the new arena, but it has stressed that there are no plans for nightclubs or any other kind of late-night entertainment. There is likely to be a shop, a ticket office and a cafe.

“Six years ago i voted in favour of Rugby at the Rec. however this was before an 18,000 seat stadium was proposed; before a land swap with Lambridge was proposedl and before a retail unit/s was/were proposed. Could you therefore stop citing my yes vote as support for the current proposal.

As for subsequent support the representations to the Charity Commissioners constitute representations, not a vote either for or against, and the 2011 "consultation" was not verified against the electoral roll nor did it require email nor residential addresses thereby facilitating multiple or fraudulent votes.”

“Presumably we should all know that this is Bath Rugby Club- but it doesn't actually say so.
Another effort from the Tea Boy? 5/10 for trying.”
